Beautiful and rare Edwardian Peignoir / Morning Coat. This piece is in beautiful condition for its age. This morning gown would be considered floor length.
The lace is both embroidered and appliquéd on white cotton tulle. The garment itself is quite intricate.
It has a large bloused sleeve, a cape type mantle that is attached to the body that goes over the shoulders and cascades down towards the center front. There is also a jabot / ruffle at the center front. The hem of the coat has a cascading ruffle. There is no closure on this item. The first two photos show the morning coat over a traditional dress of the period. The remaining photos are without an undergarment. The garment is in very good condition for its age. The tulle has held up quite nicely. There are no rips or tears however there are some small holes throughout the garment.
Most are difficult to find with the exception of the ones at the center back of the mantle (see photos). I do not believe that they effect the integrity of the piece. There are no stains or spots that I could find however the piece has some "dusty" parts and could probably use one more good soak. She already had one cleaning however it was in a smaller basin so a little more room should remove any remaining dust. This piece would have been worn over a woman's night chemise to provide a bit of modesty as she begins moving about her house in the morning.
It is delicate and beautiful and served as a sort of robe as we would know today. Please reach out with any questions or let me know if you would like additional photos.
