Vintage 1920s Blue Lace Floral Dress with Blue Silk Slip

Vintage 1920s blue floral silk lace dress with matching blue silk slip dress. The lace dress has small loops with snaps that hold the delicate net straps of the slip. The dress is loose fitting and is open in the front below the waist with 2 tails in the back. Unfortunatley, this dress is not in the best condition.

There are dark stains on both the lace dress and under slip near the hemline. There are several areas with small holes and tears in the lace and a larger hole in the top back of the lace. The fabric is fragile but may be able to be worn with care. The slip has dark staining as well with a couple of small holes but overall the fabric is intact. The dress and slip were quickly washed in a specialized silk wash detergent in cold water before listing it but the fabric is not dye fast and does run.

A label with the original owner's name is sewn inside of the dress, Mrs. Gillespie, also known as Mrs. Irene Muriel Sherman Gillespie was a member of one of the wealthiest American families of the American gilded age. Born in 1887 to her parents, William Watts Sherman and Sophia Augusta Brown. She married her husband, Lawrence in 1910 and they spent their time between their New York and Newport mansions. As she was a wealthy society lady her clothing would have been of the highest quality available. This dress was found at the Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island estate of her daughter, Eileen Slocum. Several other women and children's Victorian to 1920s clothing pieces from this estate will also be available for sale. (Measurements were taken by laying dress and doubling the necessary widths).
