Just in time for the Summer wedding season, my friend found her Mother's wedding dress. This was custom made in Chicago in 1932. That was a time when the city was in a deep Depression. But, many of Chicago's affluent continued to prosper with a developing blues and jazz scene, thriving theater and, of course, mob activity. This ivory dress has a slightly Victorian look, made of lace with a V-neck, "V" fitted seams and a train.
It is meticulously sewn by hand. It has a satin under dress or slip that was sewn by machine. It is made with snap and hook side opening, Side slit and scalloped hem. I call this a size small, I hope you agree. The slip measures a 31" bust, 26 1/2" waist, 35" hips and is 49" long.
The dress is 15" across the shoulders, 36" at the bust, 27" at the waist, 38" at the hip and has 25 sleeves measured to the points on the cuffs. It is 60" long in front and 80" long on the back; but, that is measured on the hanger, it will be shorted on a body. I believe this is in very good condition for it's age. The slip has started to perish and needs repairs. The lace dress has no flaws I can find except some age spots. Please view my photographs for more description.
